Description: Vacancy for an experienced researcher

AIROPico is a FP7 Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) network of 4 academic partners and 3 industrial partners dedicated to research and development in the field of human picornaviruses.

Picornaviruses such as enteroviruses, rhinoviruses and parechoviruses represent the most commonly encountered infectious agents in mankind. Despite this, prevalence, transmission, and pathogenesis are still largely unknown and therapy is not available. Within the present AIROPico project, the partners combine by intersectional exchanges the disciplines of pathogenesis, diagnostics and therapy development in order to understand disease and to develop effective antiviral treatments. More information on the AIROPico project can be found at

To perform part of the AIROPico research on antiviral research, the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Finland, offers a 12 month experienced researcher position. To be eligible, the candidate must be in possession of a doctoral degree or equivalent and have 4-10 years of research experience since completing their MSc. To fulfil the FP7 mobility rules for this position, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of recruitment. The Institute of Biotechnology is a research institute of the University of Helsinki, situated in the capital of Finland.

Project description

Medically-relevant viruses are cultivated either in house or by collaborating virologists from the network. The selected candidate will carry out cryo-electron microscopy, followed by 3D image reconstruction of picornaviruses and complexes, to lead to novel insights into virus

We are looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist with the with a desire to further their expertise in structural virology, and to research human picornaviruses. Previous experience with virus culture, molecular virology, light microscopy, electron microscopy, image reconstruction and human picornavirus research is desirable.
